51 killed in Gaza food queue

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The Israeli army killed 51 and wounded 200 people today when it shelled a humanitarian aid distribution site in southern Gaza with drones and tanks.

It is probably the deadliest of the near-daily attacks on people gathering near aid distribution sites, as almost all the casualties in Gaza in recent days have been linked to food deliveries rather than attacks on Hamas, the BBC reports.

Witnesses said the Israeli army shelled an area near a crossroads east of Khan Yunis, where thousands of Palestinians had gathered in the hope of receiving flour from the World Food Programme, which also includes a nearby communal kitchen.

A local journalist who was at the scene said that two rockets were first fired from drones at the crowd, followed shortly afterwards by a shell from a tank about 400 metres away.

Nasser Hospital, the main medical facility in the area, is overwhelmed with casualties, with many of the wounded being treated by doctors as they lie on the floor.

The Israeli military said it was investigating the "incident", and the report of "mass casualties" was confirmed by the World Health Organization.
