The Bank of Great Britain will today put into circulation banknotes with the image of King Charles III, making him the second royal to have his image on money, after his mother Elizabeth II.
- This is a historic moment because this is the first time we are changing the sovereign on banknotes - said Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Charles.
While the former Queen has featured on the £1 note since 1960, King Charles will feature on the £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes.
Banknotes will only be printed to replace those that have been damaged or to meet increased demand for money, reports Sky News.
With this approach, the impact of the press on the environment is reduced to a minimum, the governor explained.
The Bank of England has set up temporary collection points for the new notes at certain post offices.
