China accuses Trump of adding fuel to the fire in the conflict between Israel and Iran

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

China today accused Donald Trump of "adding fuel to the fire" in the conflict between Israel and Iran, and urged its citizens to leave both countries. President Xi Jinping expressed concern over the sharp rise in tensions and urged all parties to urgently work towards de-escalation.

"Israel's military action against Iran has caused a sharp escalation of tensions in the Middle East, which is of deep concern to China," Xi Jinping said during a meeting with the president of Uzbekistan in Kazakhstan, where he is participating in a summit of leaders of five former Soviet republics of Central Asia, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

"We oppose any action that infringes on the sovereignty of other countries," Xi added.

He also stressed that "all parties should work towards an early de-escalation of the conflict and avoid further escalation."

Since June 13, the Israeli military has been carrying out airstrikes on Iran, which it says is aimed at preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. In response, Iran has vowed to relentlessly bomb Israel until the Israeli attacks stop.

Asked by reporters about US President Donald Trump's comments yesterday that everyone should evacuate Tehran, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said:

"Adding fuel to the fire, making threats and exerting pressure will not help stabilize the situation - it will only further exacerbate tensions and widen the conflict."

The Chinese embassies in Iran and Israel today urged all Chinese citizens to leave the two countries as soon as possible.

The Chinese embassy in Iran in a message pointed to border crossings to Turkey, Armenia and Turkmenistan as possible exits from the country.

The Chinese Embassy in Israel advises against traveling across the border with Jordan, noting that civilian infrastructure has been seriously damaged, the number of civilian casualties is increasing, and the security situation is worsening.
