Researchers have announced that an unnamed German resident has been cured of HIV infection with a stem cell transplant, and the full report will be presented at the International AIDS Conference next week in Munich.
As they announced in the initial announcement, the 60-year-old German had the HIV virus since 2009, and now he is completely cured.
The scientists who worked on this case were surprised that the stem cell donor was not immune to the HIV virus, and the German citizen was cured anyway.
This is the seventh case of cure from the HIV virus in the world, but the first time that a stem cell transplant has succeeded.
However, the first conclusion after it was confirmed that the German was cured of HIV infection is that stem cell transplantation cannot be used in every case.
Scientists are not yet sure what specifically was different in this case, because in previous attempts it happened that the virus multiplied.
