Gaza: At least 30 killed in Israeli gunfire and airstrikes today

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

At least 30 people were killed across the Gaza Strip today in Israeli gunfire and airstrikes, local health officials said, as some Palestinians expressed concern that their suffering had been forgotten amid the growing focus on the air war between Israel and Iran.

The dead were the latest victims of the near-daily suffering of Palestinians trying to reach humanitarian aid since Israel partially eased a nearly three-month-long blockade of Gaza three weeks ago.

Medical sources said at least 14 people were killed in separate airstrikes on residential buildings in the Magazi refugee camp and the Zeitun settlement in central and northern Gaza. Five more people were killed in an attack on a tent settlement in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza.

Eleven more people were killed by Israeli fire while waiting for trucks carrying aid delivered by the United Nations along the Salahudin Road in central Gaza, according to doctors.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was investigating reports of civilian casualties among those waiting for food. As for the other attacks, it said it was acting with the aim of "disrupting Hamas' military capabilities" and taking "reasonable measures to minimize civilian casualties."

On Tuesday, the Gaza Health Ministry said 397 Palestinians have been killed and more than 3,000 wounded while trying to access food since the end of May, when aid deliveries resumed.

Some Gazans fear that the latest escalation in the war between Israel and Hamas, which began in October 2023, could be overlooked as international attention turns to the five-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
