The oldest person in the world passed away at the age of 117, having previously revealed what she considers the secret of longevity

Maria Branyas Morera, who was the oldest person in the world, died at the age of 117. She was born in the United States of America (USA) in 1907 and survived two world wars.

"Maria Branyas has left us. She died as she wanted - in her sleep, peacefully and without pain," her family wrote on her platform X account, the Guardian reports.

For the past two decades, Branyas has resided in the Maria del Tura nursing home in northeastern Spain.

The Guinness Book of Records officially recognized her status as the world's oldest person in January 2023, following the death of French nun Lucille Randon at the age of 118.

Her youngest daughter Rosa Moret once attributed her mother's longevity to genetics.

Branyas said she believes her longevity comes from "order, peace, good relationships with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, a carefree life, no regrets, lots of positivity and staying away from toxic people."

The oldest person alive now is Tomiko Itooka from Japan, who was born on May 23, 1908 and is 116 years old.
