The Palestinian militant group Hamas announced that it had fired rockets at cities in southern Israel in response to the "Israeli massacre of civilians" in Gaza. The Israeli military claims that around ten rockets were launched, but most were successfully intercepted. Israeli Channel 12 reported a strike on the southern city of Ashkelon.
Israeli emergency services confirmed that they were treating one person for injuries caused by shrapnel and that teams were inspecting sites of fallen rockets. Videos from Israeli emergency services showed cars with shattered windows and debris in the streets.
The first phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on March 19 after 15 months of war. Fighting was halted, some Israeli hostages were released, and Israel also freed several detained Palestinians.
However, on March 19, Israeli forces resumed their ground operations in central and southern Gaza. Over 50,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.
